Domaine des Mathevies is a family-run Dordogne campsite offering an alternative to the commercial camping scene. ‘Small is beautiful’ is their motto with just 30 terraced camping pitches, six rustic wooden chalets, four modern mobile homes and a lovingly restored gite. On site enjoy the swimming pool, tennis court, wooden children’s playground, boule court and cafe/bar/restaurant.

Just five minutes away you can pony ride through the beautiful grounds of a local farm where children can stroke the friendly farm animals. Alternatively, spend the day in a canoe on the Dordogne River where you can picnic, paddle and sunbathe. Back at the campsite join in the weekly campfire baking bread and toasting marshmallows.

Prices: A gite costs from 350 euros, mobile homes and chalets from 250 euros, a cabin from 210 euros all in the low season. A camping pitch is 6.5 euros plus additional charges per person.

2 family sized tipis Portugal on an ‘off the grid’ organic quinta Portugal | Tipping Tipis

Wow, I love the look of this place; just wish I could pack my bags and head there tomorrow. Tipping Tipis offer two 6 metre tipis on their 8 acre quinta in central Portugal. This brand new site opens in June 2013 and offers an ‘off the grid’ experience with its solar panels, local spring water for drinking and well water for washing.

The tipis come with a double bed with organic cotton sheets and a handmade quilt – a single and camp bed are also available. Both tipis have their own private shower and composting toilet. There is a large communal kitchen, lounge area plus pizza oven and bbq. You are welcome to help yourself to organic vegetables from the garden.

This area has so much to offer with its nature reserves, markets and river beaches. There’s mountain biking, horse riding and climbing school all in the locality. There is even a Geopark where you can discover tribolite fossils and cool off in a granite swimming pool.

Tipping Tipi’s has an interesting charging policy where a minimum donation of 35 euros a night for 7 nights or 40 euros per night for a minimum of three nights is asked for. The plan is to re-invest donations into developing this off-the-grid experience.

Cortijo Uribe offer horse riding holidays in the heart of Andalucia. Here you will stay in a beautifully restored manor house set in acres of olive groves and pine forests. There is so much to do here from taking riding lessons to going on a hack with all ages and abilities catered for. When you are not riding or for the non-riders there are plenty of walking and cycling opportunities on the doorstep. What I love about Cortijo Uribe is it’s charitable trust status with all its profits being ploughed back into charitable causes. Together with a strong responsible tourism ethic, they also rescue local abandoned animals. You will be guaranteed an authentic Andalucian stay meeting local people, and where possible attending the local Ferias and celebrations.

Different packages are available and holidays can be tailored to suit requirements. A 3 night/four day horse riding package costs £450 between April and October.  Just a 40 minute drive from Malaga Airport.
