When we review a holiday there are a number of boxes that need to be ticked – it always is for the family, it represents good value for money and it has good reviews. It then needs to fulfil one or more of the following criteria: is the holiday discounted/on offer, is it an adventure, an experience, are there a range of activities on site or nearby to try, will the family learn new skills?

Claire Lees, the originator of kids is passionate about travel; having backpacked the world and driven a land rover across Africa. Now, mum of 2 young children, she has had to get more creative about finding holidays that capture the free spirit of independent travel, delight the kids and not blow the budget. Top fave five beaches: Tofu beach, Mozambique – Tiwi beach, Kenya – Perhentian Kecil island, Malaysia – Kingsdown beach, Kent – anywhere on the Maldives
Maddest travel moment: Sudanese security police ‘arresting’ me whilst buying a coco cola in the Nubian desert
Maximum number of nights camping continuously: sixty nights in a roof top tent before having to book into a Sheraton for a comfy bed and hot shower
Best adrenalin moment: snowmobiling a glacier in Iceland
Best family holiday: tented lodge in western Spain with the kids free to run with the sheep, the dogs and the owners!
Best family friendly hotel: the Bull Hotel, Bridport
Where I would love to take the kids next: Iceland!
